Why is artificial turf so expensive?
While it’s true that artificial turf is much less expensive to maintain than natural grass, the upfront cost can be high due to the lengthy installation process. Before artificial turf can be installed, the current grass and sod must be removed. The area must also be graded and leveled to ensure a flat surface for the turf. A base also must be created to allow for drainage. The base must also be smoothed and compacted before the actual turf is rolled out and seamed together. The entire process takes multiple steps and is labor intensive, which adds to the high cost. At CA Green Turf, our installation experts do not take shortcuts when it comes to installing your grass properly. Our pricing represents a competitive advantage over other turf companies. How can you tell if the artificial turf is high quality?
Most of the customers are looking for artificial grass that looks like natural grass. The color, the thickness of the fibers, and the length of the fibers are important factors in selecting an authentic looking turf.
Here are some qualities to look for:
- Thickness of the fibers: The thicker fiber performs better. The thickness of the fibers is expressed in Dtex. A fiber measuring 200/99 microns is considered very thick. Generally, the thicker the fiber, the stronger it is.
- Pile Height: For a natural-looking lawn, we recommend going for a pile height of between 30 – 37mm. Anything higher than this and you risk having flat-looking grass. The reason for this is the longer the blade the heavier the blade will be and the more likely that gravity will bring it down leading to flat-look, rather than lush-look grass.
- Density: The greater the pile density, the lusher the grass will look. Low pile density grass can look thin and unrealistic.
- Backing: A good way to check the quality of artificial grass is to look at the backing. Cheaper grass will only have a single backing. The backing is typically made from latex and these layers can separate. It is important that high levels of latex are used to prevent synthetic grass from separating.
- Coating: This is the protective layer that is applied underneath the backing. The coating ensures that the fibers are firmly stuck in the backing. Lower quality products will not have a thick coating.
How can artificial grass be more environmentally friendly than natural grass?
